GALLIPOLI ( Turkey)
This port is situated on the north bank of the Dardanelles, in the precise place where this one widens to become the Sea of Marmara. The city which gave its name in the long run peninsula lining in the North the strait and the Turkish name of which is GELIBOLU, succeeded the Byzantine CALLIPOLIS. For the company of Messaging, Gallipoli was at first a stopover of the line of "Syria" (Constantinople in Alexandria). From 1857, the liners of the lines of Thessaly and Anatolia also stopped there. On the other hand the ships of the line of "Levant" did not make it stopover.
It is the circular of June 30th, 1852 that announced the creation of the Office of Distribution of Gallipoli. In 1872, this Office was closed and transferred to Rodosto. (Robert Dessert source)
